The AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series is making its return to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington this weekend for the Honda Super Cycle Weekend, round six of the 2011 championship season. Parts Unlimited rider Steve Rapp has closed the gap in the standings to just 16 points to Richie Morris Racing’s Chris Fillmore.
The last round at Barber Motorsports Park saw the two title contenders run nose to tail from start to finish, with Rapp taking home the win, his second for the season. Fillmore also has chalked up two wins this season, and has also managed to finish on the podium at all five rounds. Both riders have also scored two pole positions each, making the XR1200 Series one of the most exciting championship battles going on this season.
The close racing Rapp and Fillmore have produced continuously race after race on the evenly matched spec-class Harley-Davidson XR1200s has brought a lot of attention from the Superbike teams in the paddock, and this weekend will not only see them continuing their battle on the XRs, they will also be competing against each other in the Superbike category.
A total of nineteen riders have enlisted for the race here at the 2.4-mile 15-turn Mid-Ohio circuit this weekend, situated right in the middle of the state between Columbus and Cleveland, off Highway 71. Mid-Ohio is renowned for drawing a big crowd of motorsports enthusiasts for the AMA races each year, and this year the XR class is looking to put on a great show for the fans.
