The 2011 AMA Pro XR1200 Series championship is on the line this weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville at the season’s final race. Richie Morris Racing’s Chris Fillmore and Parts Unlimited’s Steve Rapp enter the final round with only twelve points between them.
Having held the lead in the championship from the second round, and methodically stretching his points lead throughout the season with a consistent string of podium finishes, including three wins, Fillmore’s streak was finally broken at Race 1 of the Red Bull Indianapolis GP last weekend when Fillmore got caught up in a melee fighting for the lead on the last lap, taking him out of contention. Rapp who finished second in Race 1 was thereby able to close the points gap to just six points.
Fillmore made a brilliant recovery in Race 2, however, riding with an injured shoulder, he fought at the front of the pack in Sunday’s race, taking the checkers over Rapp who once again finished second, pulling back his points lead to twelve points.
Now as Fillmore and Rapp enter the final round of the season, with no other rider within a mathematical shot of the championship, the 2011 XR crown is going to come down to a battle between these two riders, who have emerged as the quickest and most consistent racers of the season.
