MX Report: Loretta’s N.W. Regional Qualifier

MX Team Report: Loretta Lynn’s Regional Qualifier at Washougal MX Park

Vance & Hines Motocross Team riders Preston Tilford and Steven Tokarski have punched their tickets to the 2011 AMA Amateur National Championship by advancing through regional qualification at the Northwest Regional over the Memorial Day weekend. Washougal MX Park located in Southwest Washington played host to the opening round of regional qualification. The old-school track has been a fixture on the AMA Motocross circuit since the early 80’s and is one of the most scenic tracks anywhere.

The teams arrived early Friday to the Portland area and were customarily greeted by the rain showers, which frequent the area this time of year. In fact the rain showers continued the entire race weekend making the track conditions extremely challenging. Regardless of the weather riders from all over the west coast showed up to battle for the opportunity to advance.  On Saturday, the track crew made the decision to cancel all practice sessions in hopes to keep the track in good enough condition for racing action on Sunday. Thankfully the choice panned out and the weather held out long enough to prep the track.

On Sunday, Steven got things started by recording a solid second place finish in the 450 B Mod class. Following up his performance on the 450 Steven switched over to the 250 and went up against the stacked 250 B Mod class. The gate delivered a who’s who of contenders in the B class and a sneak peek of some of the battles we might see this fall. Steven did not waiver and battled hard to take home first place in moto 1. Heading into the afternoon session the rain began to come down quickly turning the track conditions into deep mud. Despite the difficult track conditions Steven was able to keep the bike on two wheels and finished 5th place in the moto 2 of both the 450 B Mod and 250 B Mod classes. With the combined moto format Steven was able to secure a 4th place overall in 450 B Mod and 3rd overall in 250 B Mod for the event.

With the rain continuing overnight Sunday into Monday the Washougal crew and AMA made the decision to move Mondays race from the main track to a temporary grass track in order to get the racing completed. The grass track was a throwback to the early days of motocross and challenged all of the riders who took the track. Preston was able to make the best of the situation and take home 4th place overall in the 250 A and Open classes for the weekend. In the heavily contested 450 A class Preston missed qualifying by one position and will try to qualify in two weeks at the Southwest Regional.

Up next the team will head to Competitive Edge MX, June 11th & 12th for the Southwest Regional Qualifier. Keep up with all the action at and at facebook/
